I made a book trailer!

I made a book trailer for Captured by the SS. I'm so proud of myself! I've never made a video before. It was really fun! I'll try to add it here.

Got Another Review

I was trying to sift through my inbox the other day, and I found another review for "Captured by the SS." Whoo-oo! I'm not sure the reviewer liked it, though. But that's OK. Nazi themed capture stories aren't everyone's cup of tea.

You can read the review here:
http://www.coffeetimeromance.com/BookReviews/capturedbythessbygailstarbright.html

Also, I'm going to try to enter the RITA contest this year for "Captured by the SS." I've never entered a story before, so I have no idea how it works.

My cat is very unhappy that I left him for a week while I was on vacation. He follows me around everywhere and seems to be get unhappy when I go to work. Poor kitty!

Oh, speaking of vacation. I think I got out of the Bahamas in just the nick of time. That's an ugly hurricane on TV! Yikes!

Well, I should call it an early night. I have to get up early tomorrow for work. Boo!

My books are MIA.

I was trying to update my web site tonight and add all the links where my books are for sale (ie, Amazon Kindle, Sony, All Romance) but I noticed many are missing from several sites. I emailed EC tonight, so hopefully they can fix it. As soon as I find them, I'll add them to my site.

Back from Vacation!

I’ve been in the Bahamas the last week!

Right now, I’m a little sun-burned and really, really tired. OMG. My plane home was delayed two hours and they had to kick us off the plane and get a new one. So, I had a rough morning. But, I’m home now. Sigh. And I get to pick up the kitty cat tomorrow.Had him boarded at the vet during the trip. I hope he's not too mad at me for boarding him.

Hopefully, I can get back to work soon.

Working on the Web Site.

Just FYI. I've been tweaking my web site lately to try to add all the links where my books are for sale. But I am so bad at web stuff. I'm having trouble with page layout. Grrr...why can't I just put this there...you know, click and drag.

Anway, I finally got my home page the way I want it. If anymore links become available, ie, Sony or AllRomance, I'll add it. I also need to add the links for my "Books" page, but I need to rethink the page layout.

It's just so cool!

For Captured by the SS!

Recommended Read!

I am so excited tonight!

Okay, let me tell you the whole story.

I came home from work and ordered a pizza because I had a lousy day at work today. Get this…I had my PA today (performance appraisal) and…I guess it went ok, but I wasn’t thrilled about it. AND I’m kind of maxed out on my pay, so I don’t get any more money…not that I make a lot of money, mind you. I just have a rather lack-luster job. Anyway, I came home in a bad mood and ordered junk food.

I wasn’t really in the mood to check my email, but I was already online. So, I figured I’d check my EC mail, just to see if my publisher had anything urgent to tell me. And guess what? I had a review AND I got a recommended read!

I’ve seen those awards on other books, but I’ve never gotten one! Here’s the link to the awesome review! Coolness! http://literarynymphsreviewsonly.blogspot.com/2011/08/captured-by-ss.html?zx=834f2d57db86b72d

High-Speed Internet Rules!

Here’s the thing.  A few years ago, I moved into this apartment complex. One of the “amenities” they offered was free wi-fi service. For a while, it worked okay…never great, just okay. But in the last few months, it really went downhill for some reason. It was slow, unreliable...uhm, did I mention SLOW. I mean slower than my old dial-up I used to have. I would get kicked off the Internet for no reason. It would lock up and freeze. It was maddening!
But the thing is, I work a million hours at my day job, and I barely have time to pick up my Diet Coke cans. I felt I really didn’t have time to fuss with finding a new provider. BUT…I finally reached my breaking point when I couldn’t e-mail back lovely fans who had taken the time to e-mail me. I used to have to hit re-fresh and I usually ended up sending the message twice. Argh!
So, I made the time! And to make a long story short, I now have an awesome cable connection with an Ethernet cable. The guy offered to hook it up as a wi-fi connection, but I was a little sick of the whole wi-fi thing. I know, I know, it probably would have worked fine because it’s my own signal and not a shared signal. Blah, blah, blah. I want an Ethernet, damn it! Plus, it was more expensive for a wi-fi.
And then, I had trouble creating links on my Yahoo site for some reason, but the good news is I think I fixed it! It turns out there were a couple of updates on my computer that I kept ignoring, plus my connection made it impossible to download anything. But, I downloaded all the updates I had and addressed all the little messages my computer has been yelling at me about, and poof, I was able to create links again on my Yahoo site. I guess when those little windows pop in the corner telling you to update something, I guess you should fix it. Grin.
I’ve also been writing again. After the SS book, I was really tired and drained for some reason. But I just write about 4k words tonight. I’m back baby, yeah!

Saying Hi.

Well, just thought I'd update the old blog. Been doing some cleaning here lately. But not much else. Captured by the SS seems to be getting quite a few reviews. That's cool! Reviews, good or bad, are always fun. All in all, I think readers are at least understanding the book, though they may or may not like it. Mmm, not much else to say. I think dinner is ready. Maybe later, I'll buy a new ebook.

Coming Soon!

SIGH, having computer problems tonight. Trying to link my book with my publisher on my home page, but it's not linking for some reason. Tested it with my blog, and it's working here. SO...I don't know. I thought it was a problem on my end, but it links on my blog...I think*grin*. I don't know. I should go to bed.

Art in the Commercial Market

Okay, okay. I admit it. For my last project, I did something…different. Now, in the commercial market, different can sometimes be a little scary. How will readers respond to this? How will buyers react? I understand. I do. Now, the title of my latest book is, Captured by the SS.

Now, before everyone just freaks out and has a heart attack, did I really do something that different? Hollywood loves to use Nazis as bad guys. Have you ever seen Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark? I mean, when was the last time you popped that movie in and watched it. Have you ever noticed just how many times the swastika shows up in that movie? Don’t  believe me? Pop it in your machine, watch it and actually count just how many time the swastika pops up in that movie. Why did the makers of the film use the swastika in every other scene? Because Nazis make good bad guys. In fact, I read a lot of criticism of the new Indiana Jones films where people were mad because it DIDN’T have the Nazis as bad guys. (In the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it’s the Russians, not the Germans).  My point is, just because Nazis make for good fiction doesn’t mean that audiences condone the actions of the Third Reich.

Now, erotica and capture. When it comes to erotica, capture or abduction is a sticky subject. If not done correctly, it can be a bad read, which is usually why capture stories have an element of fantasy. (for example, a pirate, a vampire, or an alien). I did an alternate history, where the Third Reich basically won WWII and took over most of the world as my fantasy element.

Now, alternate histories aren’t that new either. In fact, I got the idea of an alternate history reading something about steampunk, which reminded of a book I read about in grad school called, The Man in the High Castle, by Philip K. Dick. (It’s an alternate history book where the Axis powers won the war and America is a defeated and occupied territory.)

But…back to the Nazis and erotica angle. While I was self-editing my book, many months ago, I did a Google search for Nazis and erotica and sex, as I’m sure many people have doneJ I wanted to see what, if anything, was out there that compared to my book. And I stumbled across a term I’ve never heard of, “Nazi Sexploitation.”  Hell, there was even a wikipedia entry for it. I was floored! So, what is “Nazi Sexploitation”? Its’ a term to define a bunch of low-budget porno films that were made in the seventies. Now, me being the weird and slightly perverted individual I am, I had to buy these films and view them…you know, in the name of research. And just as I suspected, these films were BDSMish in nature, where Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS, is the scariest Fem Dom I have ever seen. Check out the cover here! PS, cover is the only good part. (Overall, the movies aren’t that great. In fact, they’re really bad, and I don’t recommend them. But I see what they were trying to do.) Although, I do recommend The Night Porter.

So, what else did I find in my research? Well, I found out that you can actually BUY a black SS Nazi uniform of your very own. That’s right, if you got the money and a tape measure, you can actually have a black, SS uniform made just for you. Now, does that mean people condone the actions of the Third Reich? No, that means people like to play Role-Playing games. In fact, this website that I found, which I’ll link here in a minute even said that for female clients, they can make you a skirt instead of a pair of pants, not because it’s historically accurate but simply because so many clients asked them to do it. Check it outhere! I also found this site here as well. CLICK HERE.  I mean, come on, if you came home and your woman was dressed like an SS officer and told you “you’ve been very bad.” I think that’s the ultimate, “Yes, Ma’am, I’ve been very bad” scenario.

So, did I really do something that weird or different? Well, I can’t answer that question. I don’t know how readers are going to respond to my book.  All I can say is that I see the book as fiction. More specifically, I see it as art. It’s not a statement or a political act. It’s a book. Period.

What?

What are you talking about? I don't understand what you are saying. You need to clarify what you are saying.

New Version:

What talking? I don't. You.

Yeah, that makes sense. Blurb.

Internet down!??!

Oh, what a day! Okay, here’s the deal. I have edits due tomorrow, so I hurry home from work to do some last-minute tweaking and…bam, internet goes down.  I live in an apartment with free wireless internet, but the thing is so unreliable, I think I’m going to have to start paying for better service. I made myself calm down and eat dinner, telling myself, “It’s just the internet, I’m sure I can find someplace to log in.” Lucky for me, the problem healed itself after I ate dinner. I did however overcook my steak while trying to get my connection to work. Long story short, I got my edits sent in, but I feel I rushed it a bit. I hope I did okay. Of course, it was pretty clean to start with. *Sigh*anyway, so, what is my next book about, you ask? Well, it’s a very kinky capture Nazi erotica story, of course! Check back for more details.

Captured by the SS

Just a quick update. EC offered me a contract on my latest project, Captured by the SS. I don't have a release date yet, but I got this in my email the other day. Isn't it great! Check back for more news.

Manuscript? What Manuscript?

No. I haz not seen your manuscript anywhere.

This is actually a true story. A few weeks ago, I had a hardcopy of my book I was going to read in bed. I left it on my vanity and then started making the bed. For some reason, the cat saw it as a perfect place to sit. I thought it was cute, so I took this picture.

Gail Starbright: MIA

WOW! My last post was back in January! Man, I am really bad at this blogging thing, aren’t I? Anyway, sorry I’ve been MIA lately, but I’ve been working really hard on my latest project. I know, I know, I’ve been saying that forever now. But it’s really true. I thought I was going to send it a couple of days ago, but I was reading it again, and I thought, well, let me “tweak” this or let me “tweak” that. I’ve been “tweaking” for a while now, and I still can’t let it go. I know, I know, I should just stop what I’m doing and send it, but I just want it to be perfect. Sigh...anyway, back to work.

What is going on?

Hi there!
Well, if there were blog police, I would certainly be on their most wanted list. Sorry I don’t keep up better with my online stuff. Sometimes I ban myself from the internet so I can write or edit.
Anyway, I’m working on another round of self-edits. I’m making fewer corrections, which is usually a sign that it’s getting ready to send off. I’m hoping I can send this manuscript to my editor soon.  I have no idea how EC is going to react to this story.
Sometimes, I think, “wow this is really different and unique.”  And sometimes I think, “well, I don’t know, I might piss people off with this story.” And sometimes I think, “oh, no one is going to care.”
I am so confused. I guess I just need to polish it up, send it off and see what my editor thinks.
Wish me luck!
